Qualification
Requirements for Personnel Conducting
Verification
of Fire Alarm Systems
in
the City of Winnipeg
Effective
June 1, 2008, a Manitoba Fire Alarm Technician ‘M’ Licence is required to perform fire alarm verifications in
the City of Winnipeg.
In
2006, the Provincial Board of Electrical examiners was approached by members of the fire alarm industry expressing concern
that fire alarm technicians, who are performing fire alarm tests and verifications, are not licenced to perform electrical
work such as disconnecting and installing new components on existing fire alarm systems.
The
Province of Manitoba created a new limited
specialized trade licence ‘M’ for fire alarm technicians. The scope
of this licence allows holders to maintain, service, repair and verify fire alarm systems.
A
Fire Alarm Technician ‘M’ Licence may be obtained from the Province
of Manitoba by completing an application form and providing a copy of a Canadian
Fire Alarm Association (CFAA) certificate.
Installations
of fire alarm systems must still be performed by a licenced electrician.
Fire
alarm verifications shall be conducted by a qualified person other than the installing contractor or designer.
Important
Note for Verification Reports:
In
addition to the name and contact information of the verifying organization, the submitted verification report must include
ALL of the following:
- the printed name,
- the signature,
- the ‘M’ Licence number, and
- the CFAA certificate number
of
the primary technician conducting the verification.
